Education

I have a Bachelor of Arts degree in English and a minor in Communication Studies from the University of Florida. I hold a State of Florida Department of Education Professional Educator's Certificate in Prekindergarten/Primary Education (Age 3 - Grade 3). Also, I have a Master's in Reading (K-12) from Barry University.

Experience

I was a Head Start teacher to a class of 19 4-year-olds through Broward County Public Schools (BCPS) from January 2013 until December 2015. I currently am an Intensive Reading Teacher to high school juniors and seniors in The School District of Palm Beach County. In this position, I prepare students for standardized tests such as the ACT, SAT, and FSA (Florida Standards Assessments). I began teaching in 2009 through Teach For America (TFA), a nonprofit organization that places recent college graduates to teach in under resourced public schools for 2 years. During my TFA days, I was a Head Start teacher to 15 3-year-olds and a 3rd grade teacher. During the 2014-2015 school year, I helped my preschoolers increase their letter name knowledge by 32% and letter sound knowledge by 20%. From October 2014-December 2014 I tutored a high school student struggling in reading and helped him increase his reading skills by one level. I have also tutored a 4th grader for 8 weeks (February 2015-April 2015) and in that span of time, the student improved her oral reading by one level. I love working with young learners and have a track record of raising student achievement. I truly enjoy designing engaging lessons using multiple methods of instruction to teach core competencies and essential skills. My areas of expertise include early childhood education, early childhood literacy, and reading intervention (K-12). My favorite part of tutoring is helping students make discoveries on their own. I believe students should be guided in the learning process in order to become more independent. This builds self-confidence and helps students want to learn as opposed to always being told the answers. Methods/techniques I use when tutoring include: pre- and post-assessment, graphic organizers, asking questions prior to reading to determine background knowledge of a subject, opportunities to apply knowledge to real-world settings, and Directed Reading Thinking Activity (DR-TA).
