Experience

As a fellow wahoo, I graduated from The University of Virginia (UVA), where I received both a Bachelors of Arts in Neuroscience and a Bachelors of Science in Chemistry – specifically biochemistry. During my undergraduate experience I focused heavily on independent research and was a recipient of the highly selective Harrison Research Gran. The funding I received enabled me delve further into my research, which focused on the interrelationships of the central nervous system and immune system. I proudly graduated from UVA with highest honors, yet despite various other options, I decided to focus on a different path and passion of mine, education. Despite being a recently accredited teacher, I have previously taught. In the duration of my last two years at college I was the head TA, or teaching assistant, for the organic chemistry lab offered to undergraduates. More recently, during the 2013-14 school year, I completed my first year of teaching high school chemistry, honors chemistry, and honors earth space science at Williams Preparatory School for Chicago Public Schools. As mentioned previously, I am a certified science instructor for grades 6-12 in the State of Illinois and am concurrently pursing my Masters in Education through Johns Hopkins School of Education. While I am passionate about all science disciplines, I specialize in high school and undergraduate level science courses, with a main focus in biology, chemistry, anatomy and physiology, biochemistry, molecular biology, cellular biology, and neuroscience related topics. In lieu of teaching science content, I thoroughly enjoy preparing students for standardized tests such as the ACT, SAT or SAT subject tests, as I know from personal experience how stressful it can be to feel under-prepared. As far as my specific teaching style, I am flexible. As science has clinically proven, neuroplasticity or the method in which each student obtains, processes, and interprets information is unique. Typically my individualized instruction involves the combination of my strengths as an instructor with the method(s) and techniques that help you to best understand and apply content knowledge. Alternatively, if your focus is a standardized test, my goal is for you to be and feel both confident and prepared to succeed, and even to surpass your own expectations on any future examination. Outside of academics, I love the water and am often called a fish; I enjoy wake boarding, water skiing, and cliff diving! In the rare case you are able to catch me on land, I love a great movie – whether it’s a horror, comedy, or action packed classic, as long as it has color! The one ‘nerdy’ pastime that I will divulge, and cannot dispute, is my enjoyment of reading scientific texts in my spare time; I would be a proud tutor if I can kindle your love of science to not just understand the material, but yearn to learn more.
